The Islamic Center of Richmond in Glen Allen will host a Mosque Open House event Dec. 4 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 8481 Hungary Road. The organization is hosting the event "to address the increase in Islamophobia and to provide an opportunity for the neighbors to get acquainted with Muslim neighbors while at the same time deepening their understanding of the Islamic faith," according to ICR representatives.

GainPeace and the Islamic Center of Richmond Mosque are partnering to host the event. GainPeace is a national Islamic organization that conducts several educational forums and provides literature and opportunities for others to learn about Islam.

“Muslims are opening the doors of our Mosques to our neighbors to provide them with an opportunity to get to know the Muslim community,” said GainPeace Director Sabeel Ahmed. “The current political climate has created an environment of mistrust, and also a curiosity in public to learn more about Islam and these Mosque Open Houses will educate them and take any questions on Islam.”

Lunch will be provided to all those who attend.

The event will include:

• a social hour, featuring Henna design for women, face painting for children, an Islamic artifacts table, an 'Ask Imam' booth, a Hijab booth, and virtual reality glasses to let viewers experience Islam in 360 degrees;

• a presentation about Islam, common misconceptions and working together with other faiths;

• a question-and-answer period;

• a tour of the mosque, witnessing of the Congregation Prayer, and gift-giving to guests.
