Henrico Firefighters battled a fire at an industrial building in Varina Feb. 4, shortly before 10:30 p.m. It happened in the 5700 block of Eastport Boulevard, near Charles City Road and Laburnum Avenue.

The automatic fire sprinkler system had activated and the building was evacuated. Fire crews saw smoke coming from the building when they arrived, located the fire by 10:34 p.m. and controlled the spread by 10:50 despite zero visibility levels inside the warehouse.

During their efforts, one firefighter fell from a bay door to the ground and was transported to VCU Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Additional fire units were called to the scene to assist with property protection, and a Chesterfield Fire unit responded with a specialized fire unit to assist with smoke removal.

A total of 15 fire vehicles were involved with the effort.

The Henrico Fire Marshal’s office is working with building occupant and fire personnel to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
