“You may think missing a few days a month doesn’t make a difference, but it really does!” Shady Grove Elementary School officials Tweeted Jan. 2. “Plus we miss them when they aren’t here!” Attached was a chart that showed how much school a student would miss if they were absent a certain number of days per month – if a student missed four days per month, they would miss over two years of school by graduation.

Henrico Schools will host a job fair at Fairfield Area Library on Jan. 10 from 12:30 to 4:30 PM, looking for teachers, bus drivers, nutritional and custodial staff, maintenance workers and nurses.

Mrs. Breeden’s class at Ridge Elementary worked on a science experiment using cups to investigate sound. “Look at these scientists at work!” the school said in a Jan. 3 tweet.

At Johnson Elementary School, Innovative Learning Coach Sarah Hardymon challenged students to make the tallest freestanding snowman they could – using only two pieces of paper. Hardymon taught the same lesson to Pinchbeck Elementary students in December.

Greenwood Elementary students in second through fifth grades are learning to be “Digital Citizen Superheroes” as part of their guidance counseling program. “These lessons are monthly and are great at helping students recognize how to be respectful, responsible and safe with technology,” the school tweeted on Jan. 5.

“Virginia students in grades 8 and 9 with a 2.7+ GPA can apply now to the free VA Space Grant BLAST Summer residential STEM program,” Quioccasin Middle School’s counseling department wrote in a tweet. BLAST, which stands for Building Leaders for Advancing Science and Technology, is a three-day summer program where students stay in university dorms and participate in STEM activities led by university faculty.

Richmond police visited the Hermitage ACE center on Jan. 5, allowing criminal justice students the opportunity to learn about forensics and crime scene investigation.

Henrico Schools' Director of High School Education Thomas Ferrell tweeted about Glen Allen High School teacher Blake Carrey’s recent lesson during which students compared and contrasted Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” and Kendrick Lamar’s “DNA”. “If we are truly interested in engaging students, we have to connect with them on their level,” Ferrell said.
