The fund is managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and is used to support a variety of programs, including the Virginia Natural Area Preserve System. This system of natural area preserves spans across the state and provides public access for hiking, water access, bird-watching, nature photography, and other low-impact recreation opportunities.

The fund also supports outdoor recreation grants for localities across the commonwealth whose projects focus on increasing access to safe open space in Virginia communities. This includes the Trail Access Grants program, which funds projects that make trails more accessible for people with disabilities.

The Open Space Recreation and Conservation Fund is a component of Virginia’s efforts to conserve biodiversity and expand outdoor recreation opportunities.
