Highland Springs High School celebrated its 115th commencement ceremony at Richmond Raceway June 15.

“You were created on purpose, with purpose, for a purpose,” Alicia Atkins, Varina District School Board representative, told the graduating class Class of 2021. “This diploma you're about to receive reflects your achievements, your success.”

The celebratory atmosphere began with graduates entering wearing black gowns and caps, along with gold tassels with gold sashes draped around their necks. Some students wore several multi-colored cords honoring various achievements.

“After we leave this day, know that we are the faces of America and can make change in the future,” Class of 2021 graduate Jaida Bowden said, addressing her class. “There are going to be challenges where you think your voice doesn't matter. But believe in yourself. No change ever comes from failing to believe.”

Principal Dr. Kenneth D. White recognized the resiliency, dedication and commitment shown by the graduating class throughout their four years and especially during the pandemic, and encourages students to remember the lessons COVID-19 taught them.

Valedictorian Isaiah Epps also noted the importance of graduates following their passion.

“The only advice I will give you is to choose whatever you want to do in your life,” Epps said. “Life is short, and time passes faster than you think. So whether it’s becoming a world-class doctor, or a professional gamer, don't spend your time on someone else's aspirations because to live your life chasing other people's dreams will only lead to disappointment. So find what you want to do, and put 100% into it.”
