A 14-year-old Hermitage High School student who was a passenger in a car being driven illegally by another 14-year-old Hermitage student died when the car crashed in Henrico’s West End Sept. 19.

The crash happened shortly before 6 p.m. at the intersection of Olde West Drive and Kilcolman Drive. All three occupants of the vehicle were 14-year-old boys and Hermitage students, according to Henrico Police, and all were injured when the car ran off the road and onto a sidewalk before striking a tree and a parked car. The boys were taken to a local hospital, where Keyon Johnson later died. The other two boys have non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. The car belonged to the family of one of the boys, police said in a statement.

Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash, police said.

Also killed in the crash were two dogs, Ace and Deuce, who were struck while their owner was walking them on the sidewalk. The owner was uninjured.

Counselors and additional resources are being made available for students and staff members at Hermitage by Henrico County Public Schools.
