Henrico’s unemployment rate dropped slightly from 6.7% in August to 6.5% in September – even as the number of county residents with jobs fell by more than 2,700 – according to data released today by the Virginia Employment Commission and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The data showed that an estimated 11,587 Henricoans who were seeking work in September couldn’t find it – down from the 12,237 who were in that same situation in August.

The unemployment rate’s decline was assisted by the fact that the county’s civilian labor force – people working or actively seeking work – dropped by more than 3,300 people from August to September.

About 12,200 more Henricoans were employed last September (when the county's unemployment rate was just 2.6%) than this September.

Overall, the unemployment rate of Metro Richmond dropped from 6.9% this August to 6.7% in September, according to the data.

At 15.4%, Petersburg had the highest unemployment rate in the state in September, while Highland County and Madison County (3.4%) had the lowest. Among other Richmond-area localities, Richmond’s rate was 9.2%, Chesterfield County’s 5.7% and Hanover County’s 4.4%.
