Henrico’s unemployment rate dropped below 10 percent in May

Henrico’s available workforce grew by nearly 3,000 people during the month of May and the number of unemployed residents fell by nearly 2,500 from April, according data released Wednesday by the Virginia Employment Commission.

As a result, the county’s unemployment rate fell from 11.1 percent at the end of April to 9.5 percent at the end of May, according to the VEC.

The agency calculated the county’s overall workforce to be 180,480 in May – up from 177, 712 the previous month.

The number of those people who were employed – more than 163,000 – represented an increase of more than 5,000 from April. The number of unemployed fell from 19,640 to 17,193.

By contrast, Chesterfield County’s unemployment rate fell from 10.7 percent to 8.8 percent; Hanover’s dropped from 9 percent to 7.3 percent; and Richmond’s fell from 14.2 percent to 12.5 percent.
