Henrico's new COVID cases drop slightly for second straight day

Henrico witnessed its second straight day with declining new COVID-19 case counts Tuesday, reporting 171 new cases (down from 188 Monday and 206 Sunday). The county is now averaging 200 new daily cases during the most recent seven-day period.

The Virginia Department of Health also reported four new virus-related deaths and three new hospitalizations in Henrico Tuesday. In total, seven new deaths have been reported since Saturday – one a person in his or her 40s, one in his or her 70s and five 80 or older.

Those deaths increased to 306 Henrico’s total number since the pandemic began, second-most statewide behind Fairfax County, which has witnessed 715. More than half of Henrico’s deaths have occurred in people 80 or older.

To date in Henrico, 1,129 people have been fully vaccinated and another 6,679 have received the first dose of the vaccine, according to the VDH.

Virginia officials have distributed nearly 774,000 doses of vaccine to date statewide, according to VDH data, but only 200,402 of them have been administered so far. A total of just more than 19,000 people have received both doses of the vaccine, while just more than 162,000 others have received the first dose only.

Henrico's PCR positivity percentage during the most recent seven-day window of time dropped to 14.6% as of Jan. 8, while its rapid test percentage was down to 15.3% the same day. The state averages are 16.4% and 16.2%, respectively.

The county is averaging about 2,260 tests a day during the most recent period – a jump of about 120 tests a day since last Tuesday.
