Henrico Board of Supervisors Chair and Varina District Supervisor Tyrone Nelson has been elected vice chair of the Central Virginia Transportation Authority, which helps fund regional transportation projects.

A new board of directors officially began its term July 1. Hanover County Supervisor Sean Davis was appointed chair of the authority, which since its creation in 2020 has helped fund 64 regional projects totaling more than $720.3 million and more than 200 local projects totaling more than $287.6 million.

“We are committed to project delivery – on budget and on time – and everything we do is in support of putting our region in a better position to compete for scarce transportation dollars," Davis said. "We have demonstrated our capabilities over the past few years and I look forward to building on that track record to improve the quality of life for all of our residents.”

Nelson expressed his enthusiasm for continuing the “regional collaboration” that he said has been the hallmark of the CVTA. He emphasized the organization's commitment to meeting the transportation needs of the community and region while being accountable to the residents and respecting their desires.

"Our work is critical to ensuring that Central Virginia continues to be an example for how cooperation can get results,” Nelson said.

The CVTA administers transportation funding generated through the imposition of an additional regional 0.7 percent sales and use tax and a wholesale gas tax of 7.6 cents per gallon of gasoline and 7.7 cents per gallon of diesel fuel.
