Henrico's Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Association to host virtual celebration Jan. 18

Henrico’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Association will hold its 35th Commemorative Celebration honoring King and his legacy (featuring Congressman Donald McEachin as the keynote speaker) during a virtual event at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 18.

The event, which will be streamed on the non-profit organization’s Facebook and YouTube platforms, will recognize recipients of the Lights of Hope and Distinguished Community Service awards, as well as the Keepers of the Dream scholarship. Instead of a live recognition, as in past years, there will be a video that includes the names of the recipients, because of the pandemic.

“Through the observance of Dr. King's holiday, it is our goal to bring the Henrico County community together to celebrate his legacy of universal love and brotherhood among all people,” Chairman Duane Hardy said via press release. “Lights of Hope awards will be presented to youth who best demonstrate the attributes of Dr. King. In addition, June scholarships will be announced for graduating seniors who have been selected on merit and competitive criteria.”
