Henrico's initial unemployment claims drop slightly

Table of Contents

A week after increasing for the first time in three months, the number of Henrico residents who filed initial unemployment claims during the week ending July 4 declined, but just slightly.

A total of 957 Henricoans filed first-time claims during the week of June 28-July 4, according to data released Thursday by the Virginia Employment Commission. That was a decrease of 4.6 percent.

Henrico had the ninth-most first-time filers during the week, and overall since the pandemic began in mid-March has witnessed 33,943 people apply for unemployment – the seventh-highest total in the state, just behind Richmond and Chesterfield.

After five straight weeks of decline, the number of county residents who filed continuing unemployment claims in the most recent week rose – by about 550, to 15,263. Some of those who have stopped filing unemployment claims likely have returned to work.

Statewide, about 31,000 people filed first-time claims during the most recent week, virtually the same number who had done so the previous week.
