Henrico native Townley Haas finished 12th in the semifinals of the 200-meter freestyle men's swimming competition at the Tokyo Olympics, just missing a chance to advance to the finals of the event in his second Olympic appearance. The top eight swimmers advanced and will compete Wednesday morning in Japan (Tuesday night in the U.S.)

Haas had earned a trip to the semifinals by placing 10th in the preliminary round of competition, from which the top 16 swimmers advanced to the semifinal. But his semifinal time of 1:46.07 was just several tenths of a second behind the eighth-place qualifier.

Though he won't medal in the individual competition, Haas still has another chance to medal this week – in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay event (the same event in which he earned a gold meal five years ago as part of the U.S. team in Rio de Janeiro).
