The number of people filing first-time unemployment claims in Henrico during the most recent reporting week dropped to a level seen only twice before during the pandemic, according to data released Thursday by the Virginia Employment Commission.

A total of 212 Henricoans filed initial claims during the week of Feb. 14-20, down from the 283 who did so the previous week – a decrease of 25%. It was the lowest total number of new filers in the county since the week of Nov. 22-28 (when 160 people filed). The only other time as few people have filed such claims in Henrico since the pandemic began was the week of Oct. 4-10 (191 people).

Henrico, the state’s seventh-largest locality, had the 11th-most initial filers during the most recent week. Statewide, first-time filings were down about 20% from the previous week.

The number of continuing claims in the county, however, rose slightly – from 1,968 to 2,112 – during the most recent week. It was the first increase in that category in more than a month.
