Henrico’s COVID-19 data trending in a positive direction

Table of Contents

Henrico has surpassed the 2,500 plateau in confirmed COVID-19 cases, but there’s reason for optimism about the pandemic’s impact in the county.

Only 160 new cases have been reported during the past week – about 22 per day, on average – and the county’s 7-day positivity percentage (the average percentage of people tested who test positive) has fallen to 6 percent, its lowest during the pandemic.

In total, nearly 31,000 Henricoans have been tested, and just 8 percent of them tested positive, according to the Virginia Department of Health. About 545 people now are being tested on a typical day in the county.

Though Henrico has witnessed 141 deaths attributed to the virus, only 11 have occurred this month. And only 42 of the 244 hospitalizations required for county residents because of the virus have occurred in June.

The county was hit hard by the virus early – primarily in long-term care facilities (12 of which reported outbreaks). But even those facilities now are mostly virus-free, according to the VDH. Only four long-term care facilities – Westport Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in the Near West End, Discovery Village at the West End, Chestnut Grove in Lakeside and Our Lady of Hope in the Far West End – are shown as having current outbreaks.

Of those, Westport has reported a total of 95 cases and 6 deaths since April 24, while Discovery Village has reported 61 cases and at least one death since April 12; the VDH does not list the number of deaths for a facility if that number is less than 6, in order to preserve patient anonymity, according to its website.

Neither Chestnut Grove nor Our Lady of Hope has reported any deaths attributable to the virus, and both facilities have reported fewer than 5 cases among patients, though again VDH does not show the exact number, as a way to protect the anonymity of residents.
