Henrico's 2023 population growth rate among slowest in Virginia, according to Census Bureau

Henrico County’s population grew at a slower rate in 2023 that the populations of six of the seven other largest Metro Richmond localities, according to a population estimate from the U.S. Census Bureau released Thursday.

The agency estimated that Henrico’s population grew by just 207 people from 2022 to 2023 (or 0.06%) – to a total of 334,760, or 145 residents lower than its 2020 estimated population. Of the 133 localities in Virginia, the Census Bureau estimated that 83 saw a population growth last year; Henrico ranked 81st among that group.

Meanwhile, Chesterfield County’s estimated population grew by more than 5,500 during the same timeframe – to 383,876 – while Hanover County’s grew by an estimated 1,288 residents (to 114,148), New Kent County’s grew by 1,182 (to 26,134) and Richmond’s grew by nearly 900 (to 229,247), according to the same estimate.

The report also estimated that Goochland County grew by 1,035 residents to 27,197 and Powhatan County grew by 520 residents to 32,105.

Only Charles City County, whose population grew only by an estimated 42 residents from 2022 to 2023, witnessed a smaller growth than Henrico, according to the agency.

Overall, Virginia’s population grew by an estimated 36,599 people from 2022 to 2023, the Census Bureau reported.

New Kent County’s estimated population growth of 4.7% was the largest in the state and the 10th largest nationally among counties with 20,000 or more residents; six of the top nine were in Texas, and the others were in Georgia and South Carolina.

Goochland’s estimated population growth of 3.95 was second statewide, followed by King William County (2.7%), Louisa County (2.5%) and King George County (2.3%).

Overall, Henrico’s estimated population ranks it as the 224th largest locality in the nation, just behind Durham County, North Carolina and Howard County, Maryland.
