A Henrico County woman is celebrating a $50,000 Powerball win after she nearly lost the winning ticket she bought.

Tierra Barley bought a Powerball ticket at Varina Superstore Supermarket on Darbytown Road May 8 but left the ticket in the store while she took her daughter to the park, according to Virginia Lottery officials. Barley returned to the store to find that someone else in the process of buying Powerball tickets had noticed it and returned it to her.

Barley uses numbers that she once found in a fortune cookie, and four of the five numbers hit May 8, along with the Powerball number of 51. The odds of matching all six numbers and winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, according to Virginia Lottery officials.

All Virginia Lottery profits go toward K-12 education in the state; during Fiscal Year 2023, the state received $867 million from the lottery, and Henrico County received nearly $31 million of that amount.
