Henrico voters to help decide several Virginia House of Delegates candidate nominations June 8

Table of Contents

If they haven't already voted by absentee ballot, some Henrico voters who choose to do so will cast ballots June 8 in either the Democratic or Republican primary elections for one of several Virginia House of Delegates seats.

Those who vote in the Democratic primary also will have a chance to help choose the party's nominee for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. Five candidates are seeking the party's gubernatorial nomination: former Gov. Terry McAuliffe, lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax, state Senator Jennifer McClellan, former Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy and Delegate Lee Ware. Six are seeking the nomination for lieutenant governor: Delegate Hala Ayala, Delegate Mark Levine, Norfolk City Council member Andria McClellan, Internet Association social impact director Sean Perryman, Delegate Sam Rasoul and lobbyist and sports agent Xavier Warren. Two – incumbent Mark Herring and Delegate Jay Jones – are seeking the nomination for attorney general.

State Republicans already selected their nominees for those three seats during a party convention in May, choosing Glenn Youngkin as their gubernatorial candidate, Winsome Sears as their candidate for lieutenant governor and Jason Miyares as candidate for attorney general.

In Henrico, the contested House races on the Democratic side are in the 68th, where Kyle Elliott is challenging two-term incumbent Dawn Adams; and in the 74th, where three-term incumbent Lamont Bagby is being challenged by John Dantzler.

On the Republican side, two candidates – Tom Gardner and Christopher Holmes – are vying for the party's nomination and the right to challenge two-term incumbent Democrat Schuyler VanValkenburg for the 72nd District seat in the November general election.

And Mike Dickinson and Mark Earley, Jr. are seeking the party's nomination in the 68th District for the right to face the Adams-Elliott winner in November.

In Virginia, voters may cast ballots in one party's primary election or the other, but not both. No proof of party affiliation is required.

The House of Delegates consists of 100 elected members from each of the House Districts in Virginia and represents one-half of the Virginia legislature. Each elected member serves two-year terms, with six districts involving Henrico County, including the 56th, 68th, 70th, 72nd, 73rd and 74th.
