Henrico to host virtual public design sessions for Short Pump area week of Feb. 22

Residents can share their ideas and vision for the future of an area that includes Short Pump Town Center at a virtual, county-hosted design charrette Feb. 22-26. The daily sessions will take place through the charrette hub at http://henricoconnects.com.
A charrette is an intensive, interactive planning session that encourages public participation and facilitates collaboration between residents, designers and planners on a vision for development. Participants can share ideas and will have the opportunity to provide immediate feedback to professional staff.
The study area includes Short Pump Town Center and nearby properties along West Broad Street. All sessions will be held at henricoconnects.com; the schedule and topics are:
• Kickoff and design session: Monday, Feb. 22, 6:30 p.m.; introductory presentation on planning and community development, followed by team design work on an initial plan and opportunities for participants to share ideas on the future of the study area.
• Open design studio: Tuesday, Feb. 23 through Thursday, Feb. 25, 5-6 p.m.; ongoing opportunities for participants to talk with the design team, provide input and offer feedback as a plan develops.
• Work-in-progress presentation: Friday, Feb. 26, 6:30 p.m.; review of work completed during the week and presentation of a draft plan for the study area.

Henrico officials are planning a comprehensive update to the county’s zoning code for the first time since the 1960s and are planning to incorporate some form-based code language that permits a diverse range of land uses within a single area. The concept is designed to foster compact and walkable neighborhoods with ample open space.
