Henrico supervisors seek public input about civilian review board possibility

Table of Contents

The Henrico County Board of Supervisors is seeking input from citizens about the possible creation of a civilian review board for the Henrico Division of Police.

Citizens may e-mail civilianreviewboard@henrico.us with their thoughts through the end of July. Officials are asking those who reply to provide their names and home addresses when they respond.

The Board of Supervisors has been receiving public input on establishing a civilian board that would provide oversight of the police and is encouraging further community discussion. The idea first was proposed by Varina District Supervisor Tyrone Nelson, and the other four supervisors told the Citizen earlier this month that they either supported the general idea or were open to more discussion about it.

Henrico officials expect to defer any local action on a civilian review board until after the Virginia General Assembly considers the issue for possible statewide implementation in late summer. They’re also anticipating the public feedback they receive to help shape discussions with Henrico’s delegation to the General Assembly.
