Henrico County will seek as much as $19.2 million in grant funds for the Magellan Parkway extension as a part of the county’s pursuit of state and federally-funded transportation projects.

The Board of Supervisors passed a resolution June 22 allowing the county to submit a letter of intent and provide a commitment of local match to the U.S. Department of Transportation to become eligible for funding through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity Discretionary Grant program.

The Magellan Parkway extension was identified by the county as a project that would improve safety, regional mobility, bicycle and pedestrian accessibility and access to a regionally significant economic development site, Public Works Director Terrell Hughes said at the supervisors meeting. The extension is viewed as a key part of the proposed GreenCity development, which it ultimately will serve.

The project includes the construction of:

  • Approximately 0.37 mile of roadway on a new alignment connecting Brook Road and existing Magellan Parkway;
  • A new bridge over I-95;
  • A 10-foot shared-use path.

The estimated cost of the project is $24 million, and the federal share may not exceed 80% of the total project estimate, Hughes said.
