The board awarded a $955,000 construction contract to M&F Concrete Inc. to build 3,700 feet of sidewalk along the north side of Hungary Road between Hardings Way Drive and Hungary Spring Road. Work will begin in July and last approximately 270 days. The sidewalks will be 4-5 feet wide, and the project will include pedestrian signals at Hungary Road’s intersections with Staples Mill Road and Hungary Springs Road, the relocation of water lines, and improvements to nearby storm drains. The cost is being split 50-50 with the state. Tuckahoe District Supervisor Pat O’Bannon noted that this was a relatively inexpensive project, given that the average cost for new sidewalk was $750 per foot. Director of Public Works Terrell Hughes responded that sidewalks where curb gutters already exist cost about $2 million per mile, while those without existing curb gutters ran about $6 million to $8 million per mile because of the additional drainage work.

The residents along Hungary Road have been waiting on this for a while,” said Brookland District Supervisor Dan Schmitt. “This connects a lot of stuff: the middle school on Francistown, to a recreation pool straight down Hungary Spring. . . to the Target shopping center.”The Board also awarded a $5.99 million contract to Kokosing Construction Company to replace the Wilkinson Road bridge and road approaches over Upham Brook, as well as to redesign drainage. The bridge is located on Wilkinson Road between Pony Farm Drive and Wilkinson Estates Drive, next to Three Lakes Park. Work is scheduled to run from late July to March 2025. Schmitt noted that the late July timing was ideal, as that section of Wilkinson Road would be needed during the last weekend of July “to handle tens of thousands of visitors” in town for a NASCAR race weekend at nearby Richmond Raceway.
