Henrico’s Board of Supervisors July 27 approved several contracts, including one for two projects at Deep Run Park.

Supervisors awarded a $1.5-million contract to Athens Building Corp. for the projects – a 2,719-square-foot addition to the rear of the Deep Run Recreation Center for a new fitness center and an 850-square-foot restroom building near the cricket field and bicycle pump track. Work on the projects is anticipated to begin in September and be completed within about eight months.

The board also approved a $2-million contract to Northeast Contracting Corporation, based in Lorton, for the replacement of the Henrico Jail West Facility roof system. Construction is anticipated to begin in August and be completed by March.

Other contracts awarded included those for:

• Springfield School – A $424,700 contract with Brooks & Co. General Contractors, Inc. will fund the renovation of the Springfield School building in Pouncey Tract Park. The structure is an unoccupied, deteriorated 1,467-square-foot 1-story wooden building originally used as a school for Black students. The renovation would make improvements to allow public use. Work on the construction project is anticipated to begin in September 2021 and to be completed within 180 calendar days.

• Solid waste facilities – A contract with Draper Aden Associates, Inc. will fund annual engineering services for solid waste facility projects, including: designs for facility improvements or modifications; regulatory permitting; compliance testing; groundwater and landfill gas monitoring; and refuse truck routing for the closed Springfield Road and Nine Mile Road landfills, public use areas and the Springfield Road transfer station.

• Water reclamation facility – A contract with Hazen & Sawyer will fund annual engineering services for Henrico Water Reclamation Facility projects, including: asset and equipment condition assessments; process improvements and modifications; pilot testing; modeling; and evaluation of performance and process control data to optimize performance and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.

• Capital improvement projects – A construction contract that won't exceed $500,000 for small capital improvement projects for the Department of Public Works awarded to Blakemore Construction Corp. will fund projects that may include roads, sidewalks, multi-use trails, bus pads and minor roadway reconfigurations .
