The Henrico Board of Supervisors is moving ahead with a plan to create a housing assistance program for eligible county and school system employees.

At its May 8 meeting, the board introduced an ordinance that would form the Home Purchase Assistance Program, which would offer as much as $25,000 of assistance to eligible county and school board employees and county constitutional officers, in purchasing a primary residence within the county.

The assistance would be subject to the Henrico Housing and Development Authority’s regional sales price and income limitations.

Other jurisdictions are working on similar proposals modeled on Henrico’s, staff members told supervisors. The board first heard the concept from staff members during a retreat in December.

“This is the first program of its kind I’m aware of. We’re leading this effort,” said Henrico Community Revitalization Director Eric Leabough, whose agency would administer the program.

Members of the public can offer comments on the proposal during a June 13 public hearing.
