A total of 368 people filed first-time unemployment claims in Henrico County during the week that ended Jan. 2, according to data released Thursday by the Virginia Employment Commission. That was an increase of 33 from the number who had filed the previous week in the county.

Both of those totals, however, were lower than the number of people who had filed initial claims in Henrico during each of the previous three weeks. Overall, nearly 44,600 people have filed such claims in the county since the pandemic began in March.

Henrico ranked 11th among state localities in total number of first-time filers during the most recent week.

Just more than 2,100 Henricoans filed continuing unemployment claims during the same week, nearly the same number who had done so the previous week.
