After several weeks of dwindling new cases of COVID-19 in Henrico, the county has witnessed the most reported cases during a three-day period in more than a month. A total of 115 new cases were reported between Friday and Sunday in the county, the most since 145 were reported June 6 through 8.

Overall, the county has now reported more than 2,891 cases, with those in their 30s representing the highest percentage of any age group, about 17 percent.

The good news is that only five new hospitalizations have been reported during the past four days.

The county’s 7-day positivity percentage was at its lowest point ever – 4.7 percent – July 7, then jumped to 5.8 percent the following day. It dropped to 5.7 percent July 9 – the most recent day of reporting available – but is likely to rise again given this weekend’s numbers.

Overall, about 7.2 percent of the 41,243 tests conducted on Henrico citizens have returned positive results.

Blacks account for a little more than one-third of all cases reported in Henrico – that’s just slightly higher than the overall percentage of Blacks in the county – they account for about 31 percent of all county residents.

But nearly half of all the 270 Henricoans hospitalized because of the virus are Black – a figure that is much more disproportionate.

Latinos in the county also are at a disproportionate risk – they account for about 26 percent of all cases but make up just 6 percent of the county’s population. Whites, who are about 57 percent of the population, account for less than 30 percent of the county’s COVID cases.

Nearly 300 cases of the virus have been confirmed in those 19 and younger in Henrico – that’s about 10 percent of all cases in the county. On a more positive note, that age range has accounted for Inly 5 hospitalizations and no deaths.

In total, 173 virus-related deaths have been reported in Henrico – exactly half occurred in those 80 or older, and all but 10 of the others occurred in those in their 60s or 70s.
