As part of a week-long celebration of Flag Day, the Virginia War Memorial's first-ever "Hill of Heroes" project was launched June 8 with the help of dozens of community volunteers and local scouts.

Volunteers arrived at the memorial at 8 a.m. to install 12,000 American flags – representing the approximately 12,000 Virginians who have made the ultimate sacrifice since WWII – on the hillside where the memorial overlooks the James River.

Among scouts who participated were members of Troop 720 in Glen Allen, as well as Jakai White and E'myah White and their mother, Cheryl McGolden (pictured, above). Jakai is from Boy Scout Troop 501 in Varina, while E'myah is from Cub Scout Pack 501 in Varina and AHG Troop 1736 in Mechanicsville.
