Henrico Schools to require students to wear ID cards

Implementation of the new ID cards follows a successful pilot version of the program for bus riders last school year.

The new ID cards will be used by students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade to ride the bus, check out books, get lunch, use vending machines at the cafeteria and access technology services. The cards are encrypted and only accessible through the school's internal systems.

"We are thrilled to see how these student ID cards will positively impact our 50,000 students across Henrico County Public Schools," said Amy Cashwell, HCPS superintendent. "These cards will boost our mission to provide a safe and productive school environment where all our students can thrive."

Students will receive their cards when they return to school on Aug. 19, along with an HCPS-issued breakaway lanyard and protective sleeve. Students will be required to wear their lanyards to keep their cards visible throughout the school day.

Required use of the student ID cards for after-school activities like sporting events and concerts will be phased in over time, beginning with varsity and junior varsity football games at high schools this fall.
