Table of Contents

Henrico Schools officials will host another “Drive the Bus” event Saturday, Dec. 11 at Richmond Raceway, in an effort to hire more bus drivers.

The event is a hands-on chance for potential drivers to take a bus for a spin around a large driving course. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot outside the raceway. (A valid Virginia driver’s license is required.) Participants are asked to register in advance at www.henricoschools.us/transportation/.

Newly hired bus drivers are eligible for a bonus of up to $2,000, paid in installments throughout the year, upon joining the school system. HCPS also has offered new safe driver and attendance incentives to drivers already on staff. Current drivers who refer someone hired as a new driver also may receive a bonus.

Qualified bus driver candidates will be paid as they train.

The school system held a similar event during the summer that attracted about 70 potential drivers.

Attendees should enter the raceway through the main gates at the corner of Laburnum Avenue and Richmond Henrico Turnpike.

Candidates for full-time and substitute bus drivers must:
• be at least 21 years old;
• have a valid Virginia driver’s license;
• be able to obtain a CDL Class B instructional permit or hold a CDL Class B license with endorsements in P (Transporting Passengers)/S (School Bus) and airbrakes;
• pass a physical and a drug test.

Depending upon the situation, candidates with felony convictions may be eligible for employment.
