Henrico Schools to continue free meal distribution

Henrico County Public Schools will continue offering free school meals to all students through the end of the 2020-21 school year, as the result of an extension of federal food aid designed to offer help during the coronavirus pandemic.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture had announced in September that it was extending two summer school meals programs — the Summer Food Service Program and Seamless Summer Option — through the end of 2020. Last week, it announced that the programs would continue until the end of the school year, after Congress passed funding for the measure.

HCPS is distributing free breakfasts and lunches to students through curbside pick-up at all Henrico schools and through twice-weekly bus stop deliveries at 61 spots countywide. The school system is reimbursed for the cost of all meals it distributes, but is not reimbursed for meals that it does not.

Meals are available at no cost to any child 18 or younger – whether or not they are enrolled in a Henrico school – at all HCPS school locations and identified bus stops. Parents and guardians can pick up meals at any HCPS location regardless of where their student is enrolled and don't need to show identification.

Curbside service at schools is available Monday through Thursday (Friday meals are distributed on Thursdays) from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

School bus distribution occurs on Mondays and Wednesdays, with Monday deliveries including meals for Monday and Tuesday, and Wednesday deliveries including meals for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, as well as breakfast for the following Monday. Buses make 30-minute stops at each spot below:
