The Henrico School Board Thursday voted to turn Friday, June 18 – the scheduled last day of school – into a student holiday in honor of Juneteenth, which falls on a Saturday this year. The change means that June 17 will become the last day of school for students and teachers.

Juneteenth (June 19) is celebrated as the day on which word that slavery had been abolished reached the farthest western point in the United States (Galveston, Texas) in 1865. Gov. Ralph Northam made it a permanent state holiday last summer.

The board also voted to adopt virtual learning for all students June 8, the date of the Virginia Democratic primary elections, in order to reduce disruptions and prioritize safety, since 58 schools serve as polling places.
