Since Sept. 1, the earliest HCPS’ public case count goes back, there have been 1,236 cases reported in schools — 649 in elementary schools, 258 in middle schools, 306 in high schools and 23 in various annexes.

There have also been 6,989 “close contacts,” also known as exposures — 2,542 in elementary schools, 2,159 in middle schools, 2,247 in high schools and 41 in various annexes. But despite the number of exposures, there have only been 36 outbreaks, which are defined by HCPS as two or more cases that are linked together.

There are about 48,000 in-person students and about 7,000 staff members in HCPS, according to the most recent estimates provided by the school district.

The schools with the highest number of positive cases last week were Pinchbeck Elementary and Maybeury Elementary with five each. The highest number of exposures occurred at Brookland Middle last week, where two cases resulted in 55 close contacts.

Since pediatric COVID-19 vaccines for 5-11 year-olds became available locally in early November, more than 6,500 Henrico children under 11 have received at least one dose, according to the Virginia Department of Health vaccine dashboard. That’s about 23.7% of the total population of Henrico children ages 5-11. Statewide, 22.5% of children 5-11 were vaccinated as of Wednesday afternoon.

While Henrico County was slightly above the state average for vaccinating the youngest age group, neighboring Chesterfield County is a bit below at 21.9%. In the city of Richmond, the vaccination rate for children 5-11 years old is lower, at 17.7%.
