Henrico Schools' redistricting process to begin next month

Table of Contents

Henrico Schools will host two meetings next month to provide information about its redistricting process, which will begin in earnest in September. The school system is examining and may alter school attendance zones countywide in time for the beginning of the 2021-22 school year.

The process is being spurred by the fact that Holladay Elementary School will double in size next year, and new larger versions of Highland Springs and Tucker High School also will open at that time. The resulting boundary shifts could impact a majority of schools. Next month's meetings will be identical and will be held:

• Sept. 9, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the New Bridge Learning Center auditorium, 5915 Nine Mile Road,;

• Sept. 11, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Glen Allen High School, 10700 Staples Mill Road.

The redistricting process will be led by a committee of citizens who will consider the school system's goals, create and evaluate proposed boundaries and ultimately recommend a plan of action to the School Board. Committee members have been selected from a pool of 385 applicants, according to school system officials. They will meet in two groups following next month's initial meetings; the group concentrating on the elementary process will meet at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 9, while the group overseeing the secondary process will meet at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11.

The committee will include members from each public school zone. In addition to attending public input opportunities and School Board meetings, interested citizens also may attend redistricting committee meetings as observers.
