The Henrico County Public Schools Welcome Center at J.R. Tucker High School now carries the name of Henrico County Manager John Vithoulkas, an alumnus of the school.

School officials made the announcement during a dedication ceremony at the school Sept. 13.

The center assists families who have entered the county by evaluating, assessing and registering their students in their zoned schools. Since its establishment in 2006, it has helped more than 7,500 children whose families came to Henrico County from more than 120 different countries.

Vithoulkas himself came to the U.S. from Greece with his family as a young child and later became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

In a statement, school officials said that Vithoulkas’s story “embodies the center’s work.”

Also during Monday’s ceremony, officials announced the creation of the annual HCPS J. Vithoulkas Community Impact Award, for those who embody his commitment to enriching the lives of Henrico citizens.
