Henrico Schools officials hosted their annual Letter of Intent Signing Day May 18 to recognize 47 Career and Technical Education students who are using the training they’ve received in high school to start their careers immediately upon graduation next month.

The annual event drew national attention when it began several years ago and has become a staple for the school system, now emulated by a number of others nationally and beyond.

Nathaniel Hall and Isaiah Gilliam (pictured above) were among the students to sign letters of intent during the ceremony. They’ll be joining James River Exteriors, a 29-year-old company, and participating in a paid training program through the Virginia Masonry Association’s apprenticeship program, through which they’ll be paid weekly, receive health and dental coverage after 90 days and receive a simple IRA plan with company match.

JRE founder and president Mike Chaney said the program already had produced some success stories for his company, which has now participated in it for three years.

“These two young men here are the next phase of this for us, and we’re excited to have them,” Chaney said.
