Henrico County's public schools are becoming more diverse, according to data released by the school system this week.

Between 2010 and 2019, the number of Hispanic students attending the county's schools increased by 78 percent – from about 3,000 to more than 5,300 – and the number of Asian students rose by 68 percent – from about 3,600 to about ,6,000.

During the same period of time, the number of white students has dropped by about 3600, while the number of black students has slipped by slightly more than 200.

Overall, whites make up 37 percent of the student population, blacks 35 percent, Asians 12 percent and Hispanics 11 percent.

The overall student population has remained relatively steady, growing by only about 2,000 students – to 50,406 – during that time.

Another significant change is in the percentage of students who are eligible for free or reduced lunches because of their families economic status. That number has grown from 37 percent in 2010 to 46 percent last year.

At least 100 languages are spoken in Henrico's public schools, according to school system officials.
