Henrico County Public Schools will hold two information sessions next week to inform citizens about the comprehensive redistricting process the system is undertaking.
The first public information session will be Sept. 9 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at New Bridge Learning Center auditorium, and an identical session will be held Sept. 11 at Glen Allen High School during the same hours.
Members of the public can get an overview of the process, find out ways to get involved, and hear when various redistricting options are expected to be made available. Representatives of Cropper GIS, the redistricting consulting firm that is assisting the school division, will be present, as will HCPS school leaders and staff. For those who cannot attend, the information sessions will be livestreamed at the school division’s website, henricoschools.us. The sessions also will be recorded and made available at https://henricoschools.us/redistricting2021/ in the days after the event.
The school division is examining and redrawing elementary, middle and high school attendance zones for the 2021-22 school year, in preparation for the opening of new versions of Highland Springs and Tucker high schools; an expanded version of Holladay Elementary, which will double in size; and to address crowded conditions at various schools countywide.
The redistricting process now has a timeline, a schedule of various opportunities for the public to provide input, and two citizen committees in place that will collaborate on the process.
The elementary school committee will meet for its orientation after the Sept. 9 public information session and the middle and high school committee will meet for orientation after the Sept. 11 session. Three hundred and eighty-five community members applied to participate on the two committees. Each HCPS school attendance area will be represented. In addition to attending public information sessions and School Board meetings, members of the public are welcome to attend redistricting committee meetings as observers.
