Henrico School Board to elect new chair, vice-chair at Jan. 9 meeting

Henrico School Board members will meet at 3 p.m. on Thursday to elect a new school board chair and vice-chair for 2025.
Alicia Atkins, who represents the Varina District, is the current board chair, while Marcie Shea, representing the Tuckahoe District, serves as the current vice-chair. Atkins is the first Black woman to serve as Henrico’s school board chair. The chair and vice-chair positions are re-elected every year.
The school board will also vote on new committee assignments for 2025. School board members serve on 20 different advisory committees covering topics such as gifted education, equity and diversity, multilingual learners, special education, and family and community engagement.
School board members also will vote on accepting $1.2 million in School Improvement Grants from the Virginia Department of Education, which will support reading and math intervention and tutoring efforts at 20 elementary and middle schools:
• $199,100 to Glen Lea Elementary for math coaching for teachers and math tutoring for identified students in grades 3-5;
• $172,000 to Fair Oaks Elementary for math coaching for teachers and math tutoring for identified students in grades 3-5;
• $149,240 to Highland Springs Elementary for math coaching for teachers grades 3-5 and math tutoring for identified students in grades 3-5;
• $72,000 to Elko Middle for tutors for students who require reading or math intervention;
• $49,400 to Harvie Elementary for reading and math coaching for intervention staff;
• $49,400 to Anthony P. Mehfoud Elementary for math coaching for intervention staff grades K-2;
• $48,128 to Fairfield Middle for reading and math tutors, headphones for digital resources used for tutoring, and payment for teachers working outside of contract hours;
• $48,067 to Montrose Elementary for reading and math tutoring for identified students and professional learning for reading intervention teachers;
• $48,030 to Douglas L. Wilder Middle for reading and math tutoring for identified students and reading intervention supplies;
• $48,000 to Harold Macon Ratcliffe Elementary for reading and math coaching for intervention staff;
• $48,000 to Henry Ward Elementary for reading and math tutoring for identified students;
• $46,800 to Laburnum Elementary for tutors for students who require reading or math intervention;
• $43,200 to Ridge Elementary for math tutoring for identified students in grades 3-5;
• $42,929 to Brookland Middle for reading and math tutoring and supplies, along with payment for reading and math teachers working outside of contract hours;
• $40,300 to Varina Elementary for math coaching for teachers and math tutoring for identified students in grades 3-5;
• $27,903 to Quioccasin Middle for reading and math intervention supplies;
• $23,463 to Jacob L. Adams Elementary for reading and math coaching for staff grades 3-5;
• $10,594 to Hungary Creek Middle for reading and math intervention supplies and payment for reading and math teachers working outside of contract hours;
• $9,085 to Tuckahoe Middle for reading and math intervention supplies and payment for reading and math teachers working outside of contract hours;
• $922 to John Rolfe Middle for reading intervention supplies.
