Henrico School Board expected to vote Jan. 28 on 2 redistricting priority areas

Table of Contents

The Henrico School Board is expected to vote at its Jan. 28 meeting on measures to address two of three “redistricting priority areas,” which target specific attendance boundary challenges. Any adopted changes would take effect in fall 2021. The two redistricting priority area proposals the board will consider Jan. 28 concern:

• Making the most effective use of the additional capacity available when the expansion project is finished at Holladay Elementary School in the Brookland District.

• Addressing overcapacity issues at Colonial Trail and Rivers Edge elementary schools in the Three Chopt District.

The board decided Nov. 12 to defer discussion on a third redistricting priority area until fall 2021. That discussion concerns the feeder elementary schools that determine how students are assigned to Quioccasin Middle School in the Tuckahoe District.

The school system has posted details about the proposals, as well as an interactive map and list of neighborhoods that would be affected, at https://henricoschools.us/redistricting/.

Members of the public may still comment in two ways on the two priority area proposals the Board will consider:

• By using the redistricting “General Feedback Form” on HCPS’ redistricting page, at https://henricoschools.us/redistricting/.

• By submitting written comments specifically for the Jan. 28 School Board meeting by going to the board’s page at https://henricoschools.us/school-board/ and viewing “Address the School Board.”

The school division also held a Jan. 14 public forum on the priority areas, as well as three public information sessions in November.

In September, the board asked HCPS staff to discontinue a process of comprehensive countywide redistricting and instead address the smaller redistricting needs.
