UPDATED: JULY 8, 5:13 P.M. – The Henrico School Board will host an in-person town hall-style meeting next week and then an in-person work session the following week.

The community meeting July 14 – designed "to answer questions about matters of public interest, including the latest guidance and plans for reopening school," according to a press release – will take place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Glen Allen High School.

The work session will take place Thursday, July 23.

Citizens may submit questions for board members in advance of the July 14 meeting by visiting this website or by e-mailing schoolboard@henrico.k12.va.us. It was unclear whether attendees will be permitted to address the board at the meeting.

In keeping with Phase Three guidelines in Virginia, no more than 250 attendees will be permitted at the meeting, and everyone ages 10 and older will be required to wear a mask and will undergo a brief health screening before entering, officials said. Masks will be provided for those who need them. Officials are encouraging no more than one representative from each family to attend, in order to allow for a wider range of people to attend.

Although the School Board typically takes July off, Brookland District member Kristi Kinsella told the Citizen that this year is different.

“[T]hese are unprecedented times, and we wanted to stay connected with our community outside of just receiving emails from everyone, and we wanted to keep the lines of communication open with our teachers, our staff, our parents, and community members on things that are on their minds,” Kinsella said. “I don't expect any final decisions to be announced Tuesday night, but we will be giving an update on where we are in the process and just having an open dialogue."

Both meetings will be live-streamed online at henricoschools.us for those who cannot attend in person.

The School Board does not accept public comments during its work sessions. It last met in person last month during a joint work session with the Board of Supervisors, which also does not accept public comment during such meetings.
