The Henrico School Board voted unanimously on Thursday to elect board member Marcie Shea, who represents the Tuckahoe District, as its new chairwoman.

Shea, who formerly served as vice chair, announced on Monday that she has stage four breast cancer, but plans to serve on the board for as long as her health and treatment plan allows.

The board also unanimously elected Brookland representative Kristi Kinsella to serve as vice chair. This is her first leadership role on the Henrico School Board.

Both Shea and Kinsella were elected in 2019 and joined the board in 2020.

Before new leadership was elected on Thursday, board member Roscoe Cooper, III (Fairfield District) served as chairman. Micky Ogburn (Three Chopt District) was originally elected to serve as chair in January 2021, but resigned from her position a few months later after sharing an offensive Facebook post.

"Reverend Cooper, I want to thank you for stepping in when you did and being there when we needed... as you always are, and have been for years," Ogburn said.
