The Henrico School Board Thursday unanimously approved school redistricting plans that will impact some students at a handful of western Henrico elementary schools.

The boundary shifts will relieve some overcrowding issues at Rivers Edge and Colonial Trail elementary schools in the Far West End and also shift students from Kaechele, Longan, Springfield Park and Twin Hickory to new schools.

Even with the changes, overcrowding will continue to be an issue at Rivers Edge, Three Chopt board member Micky Ogburn said. School officials intend to add additional classrooms to one West End school and increase the capacity of Longan and Jackson Davis when they are completely rebuilt in the coming years, she said, as a way to help address that issue.

The redistricting effort also was designed to best align schools to maximize space in advance of the opening this fall of a twice-as-large version of Holladay Elementary School in Lakeside, where expansion efforts are ongoing.

The changes bring all of the Twin Hickory community together at Twin Hickory Elementary by moving four neighborhoods in the community – Cobblestone Landing, Hickory Woods, Parsons Walk and Waters Edge – out of the Colonial Trail zone. Four other communities – Avia Apartments, Saunders Station Condominium, Saunders Station Townes and Timberlake EL – will take their place there, moving from Kaechele.

Nine neighborhoods that have been zoned for Longan (Brittany, Dove Hollow, Elk Ridge, Hill Trace, Ironwood at Crossridge, Mountain Cove, Revilo, Staples Mill Trace and Twin Oaks) will switch to Echo Lake instead, while six zoned for Rivers Edge (Four Seasons Condominiums, Oakland Hills, Stewart Meadows, The Meadows, Village at Innsbrook and Villa at Innsbrook) will move to Springfield Park.

Two apartment complexes zoned for Springfield Park – Breckenridge and Champions Club – now will more to Longan.

And the Addison at Wyndham, Hickory Grove and Townes at Shady Grove communities will switch to Kaechele.
