Henrico Police Tuesday confirmed the sixth case of rabies in the county. It stemmed from an incident Nov. 7 in the 1900 block of Greenhurst Drive (near Three Chopt and Parham roads), when Henrico Animal Protection officers responded to a call of three dogs fighting a raccoon that had come onto their property.

The dogs’ owner was able to drive the raccoon out of the yard, but only after it had fought extensively with the dogs. Officers were able to locate the raccoon nearby, and they later submitted its remains to the state lab for rabies testing, which came back positive.

The dogs involved in the incident will be quarantined on the owner's property. There was no additional animal, or human exposure reported.

If you see abnormal wildlife behavior or have possible rabies exposure, call the Henrico Police Non-Emergency Communications Center at (804) 501-5000.
