Police said the cat became ill and acting out of character March 28 in the 1500 block of Rustling Cedar Lane in the Varina District. No other animals or humans were exposed to the cat, according to police.

The cat's remains were submitted to the Virginia state lab, which confirmed a positive case of rabies (the second confirmed case in the county so far this year).
