Henrico ranks as 24th growth region nationally in U-Haul analysis

Henrico was the 24th growth locality in America in 2022 – and the only Virginia locality in the top 25 – according to the U-Haul Growth Index, which analyzed customer moves during 2022.

The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled according to the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks arriving in a city or state, versus those departing from that city or state, in a calendar year, according to the company. It compiles migration trends data from more than 2 million one-way U-Haul truck transactions that occur annually across the U.S. and Canada.

People arriving in Henrico in one-way U-Haul trucks fell 19% from 2021, but departures fell 20%. Because of fewer people leaving the area, do-it-yourself movers arriving in Henrico accounted for 51.6% of all one-way U-Haul truck traffic in and out of the market (48.4% departures).

Henrico has been a consistent net-gain market for do-it-yourself movers who use U-Haul, according to company officials, and helped pace Virginia’s climb to No. 5 in the U-Haul growth state rankings for 2022.

“I’m not surprised it’s a leading U-Haul growth city,” said Clinton O’Neill, U-Haul Company of Richmond president. “There is a lot of redevelopment around this area. I’ve noticed people in their mid-20s and 30s moving here for the vibrant lifestyle. There are new restaurants, breweries and rooftop lounges.

“There are people who want easy access to the nightlife, distilleries and taprooms, but want to be away from the hustle and bustle when they go home. That’s what makes Henrico so attractive. You can walk your dog in the beautiful parks in the morning and have a beer on a rooftop at night. Everywhere you go there are new condos. U-Haul trucks are coming in here in droves.”

Ocala, Florida topped the U-Haul list in 2022 as the No. 1 growth city in the nation, followed by Sacramento/Roseville, California; Madison, Wisconsin; Palm Bay/Melbourne, Florida; and Auburn/Opelika, Alabama.

U-Haul migration trends do not correlate directly to population or economic growth, but company officials contend that the U-Haul Growth Index is an effective gauge of how well cities and states are attracting and maintaining residents. View the growth state rankings for 2022 at myuhaulstory.com.
