Henrico Police: thieves targeting cars at parks

Table of Contents

Thieves are targeting vehicles parked at recreational facilities, Henrico County parks, the Virginia Capital Trail trail-head parking lots and vehicles parked at numerous fitness centers throughout Henrico County, according to Henrico Police.

Police issued a warning to citizens that thieves are looking for valuables left in plain view – especially the following items:

• pocketbooks/purses;

• wallets;

• laptop computers;

• firearms;

• money.

When thieves see these and other valuable items in plain view inside parked vehicles, they have been smashing the vehicle's window(s) and grabbing those items within seconds.

Also of particular interest to thieves are:

• personal identification documents for identity theft;

• credit, debit and ATM cards;

• checkbooks

Police advise citizens to be alert for suspicious person(s) or vehicle(s) around as they park their vehicles.

You always should place all valuable items and personal identity documents out of sight of common observation. Don't leave a spare key(s) in an easily accessible location within the vehicle’s interior or exterior, police advised, and always lock your unattended vehicle.

If you see something out of place when you return to your vehicle, you should call police immediately.
