The man convicted in the hit-and-run that killed Henrico Police Captain Donald Lambert, Jr. nearly one year ago will serve 28 years in prison, following sentencing in Henrico County Circuit Court Friday.

Chesterfield resident Justin Regensburg was sentenced to 40 years in prison for felony homicide, with 15 years suspended, and five years for hit-and-run, with two years suspended. He pleaded guilty to the two charges last September; in exchange, prosecutors dropped three lesser charges.

He had faced a maximum of 50 years in jail and a $2,500 fine for the two convictions.

A tow-truck driven by Regensburg struck and killed Lambert, 55, in Feb. 27, 2021 as he jogged along Greenwood Road. Regensburg was arrested the next day in King William County.

Regensburg had a list of previous driving violations and convictions.
