Henrico Police captain struck, killed in Glen Allen by driver who fled scene

A 33-year veteran of the Henrico Police force died Saturday when he was struck by a car in Glen Allen, near the Hanover County line.

Capt. Donald L. Lambert, Jr. was off duty and on foot at the time when he was struck by a driver on Greenwood Road. The incident prompted a significant police response that involved more than two dozen vehicles and numerous officers.

As of 7 p.m., police were still searching for the driver but had not released details about the type of car he or she was believed to have been driving. Lambert was the captain of the division's Special Operations Group.

"We are deeply saddened at the tragic and untimely loss of Capt. Lambert," Henrico Police Chief Eric English said in a statement. "He was a selfless leader, mentor and friend who served our community with pride and dedication for nearly 34 years. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, colleagues and friends."

Tributes to Lambert began filling social media Saturday evening.

The Virginia Association of Police Chiefs tweeted: "We are so deeply saddened by this news. Capt. Lambert is a graduate of one of our leadership programs and is someone we have worked with for many years on traffic safety programs. We are grieving with Henrico Police and Don's family tonight."
