The nonprofit Henrico Police Athletic League will hold its annual Community Day event Monday, July 10, from 9 a.m. to noon – for the first time from its newly renovated home in the former MathScience Innovation Center in Eastern Henrico. As part of its summer camps, HPAL’s Community Day provides youngsters with experiences that are designed to underscore the importance of service to others and the community.

Community Day will include several community service projects:

  • a food drive that will benefit the nonprofit Henrico Community Food Bank (HPAL will collect canned and other nonperishable food items through Friday, Aug. 4, with the goal of producing 2,000 meals);
  • HPAL students will create a “hundreds chart” at Harvie Elementary School, a visual tool to help students learn concepts and patterns in numbers and mathematics;
  • HPAL students will compose personal letters to local seniors to promote belonging and connection between the generations.

Community Day will include a brief formal program at 11:30 a.m. Speakers will include Henrico County Board of Supervisors Chairman Frank J. Thornton, of the Fairfield District; Kenneth Ragland, executive director of the Henrico Police Athletic League; and Monica Smith-Callahan, Henrico deputy county manager for community affairs.

Henrico Police Athletic League is located at 2401 Hartman Street in Henrico.
