The Henrico Division of Police and two Henrico police officers this summer earned recognition from the Virginia State Police for their efforts in combating vehicle theft and theft of vehicle parts in Virginia.

During an awards ceremony Aug. 26 for the VSP's Help Eliminate Auto Theft program, held during the annual conference of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police & Foundation in Roanoke, the division was named a finalist in the category for agencies that serve more than 100,000 people. Prince William Police earned the top award, while Henrico and Newport News were finalists.

Henrico Police Det. Scott Letteer was named an individual winner for departments serving more than 100,000, while Henrico Patrol Ofc. Daniel Crosby was named a finalist in the same category.

The HEAT program, which is open to all Virginia law enforcement agencies and employees involved in auto theft enforcement and prevention, aims to encourage collaboration and recognize achievements in reducing vehicle theft.

“We are grateful to law enforcement agencies and officers from throughout Virginia who join with the Virginia State Police in fighting vehicle theft,” said HEAT Program Coordinator First Sergeant Peter Lazear. “These annual awards are an opportunity to recognize outstanding efforts.”

The public's participation also plays a key role in preventing vehicle theft, Lazear said. He advised vehicle owners always to take their keys with them and lock their doors; never leave valuables in plain sight; be aware of the surroundings; park in well-lit area; invest in an audible or visible deterrent; and install GPS or other tracking devices.
